        Coming in to New Brighton

          Heading to Liverpool

Every New Brighton train runs under the Mersey, goes once round the Liverpool loop and comes straight back: 27 minutes out, 23 minutes home. Positions are worked out from the timetable, not tracked live. Fast-forward plays the day at 60 times speed, an hour a minute.

            The Merseyrail network now

            Modelled

New Brighton trains follow the timetable. Other trains are modelled from standard frequencies: every 15 minutes on most branches in the daytime, every 30 minutes in the evening, on Sundays and to Ellesmere Port. This shows how the network should look, not live tracking. Tap a station for its name.

Passenger figures are the Office of Rail and Road estimate of journeys starting or ending here: 1,192,234 in 2024-25, the 462nd busiest of 2,589 stations. Part of the jumps in 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2024-25 comes from changes in how the ORR counts Merseyside tickets.

            The station's story

            1888 to now

A seaside terminus built for day trippers, with a long concrete Art Deco canopy that still shelters the platform.

The canopy came with electrification in 1938 and matches the one at West Kirby. The station building is not on the National Heritage List, so nothing here is formally protected.

            1. 18882 January

The line opens from Bidston to a temporary terminus at Wallasey, today's Wallasey Grove Road.

            2. 188830 March

The line reaches New Brighton and the station opens as the end of the branch, built by the Seacombe, Hoylake and Deeside Railway under the Wirral Railway.

            3. 1891

Bass brewery's works outing from Burton upon Trent arrives on 13 special trains. It comes back four more times, with 17 trains in 1904.

            4. 1898

New Brighton Tower opens. At 567 feet it is the tallest building in Britain, and the railway brings the day visitors.

            5. 1923

The Wirral Railway becomes part of the LMS, and a daily through carriage runs from New Brighton to London Euston.

            6. 193814 March

Electric trains start running straight through to Liverpool under the Mersey. The Art Deco canopy dates from this rebuild.

            7. 1960

Diesel trains from Wrexham and Chester start running through to New Brighton. The direct Chester Northgate service ends in 1968.

            8. 196530 October

              The goods yard closes.

            9. 1971

Regular diesel trains from Wrexham are cut back to Birkenhead North, and ferry sailings to New Brighton end.

            10. 19779 May

The Liverpool loop opens under the city centre, and New Brighton trains start running round it.

            11. 197825 October

The Queen formally opens the Merseyrail network.

            12. 1985

The last of the 1938 electric trains retire. The Class 507 and 508 trains take over.

            13. 2023

The new Stadler Class 777 trains arrive. By November 2024 every Merseyrail train is a 777.

            14. 2026
